All hope is not lost!

You may have heard of a command to turn off the LCD screen on HERO5/HERO6/HERO7 cameras. It got some discussion on the official GoPro forums. It’s the same command to turn off the LCD and back on from the HERO4 Silver. Except, on the HERO4 Silver you could turn it back on from the front screen…. Oops.

So, you turned off the back screen on your camera, and now you want to turn it back on. After all, you cannot turn WiFi on or off from the front screen (Pro Tip: Press Left+Top buttons to turn on Dive Mode, you can change video/photo settings from there only using the buttons and front screen… But you cannot change WiFi settings.).

DO NOT — IN ANY CIRCUMSTANCE — RESET THE CAMERA. YOU NEED TO KNOW YOUR WIFI PASSWORD.

You have 3 options:

  • Option 1: execute the LCD on URL:

If your camera still has WiFi on, connect to it and execute this URL: http://10.5.5.9/gp/gpControl/setting/72/1

The LCD should turn on, an active WiFi connection is needed.

  • Option 2: WiFi is dormant, Bluetooth LE is on:

Use gopro-ble-py to pair with the cam and enable WiFi — then follow option 1.

  • Option 3: WiFi is OFF, but you do know the password:

If your camera does not have WiFi / BLE on, and you know the password for the WiFi AP, you can create a file on the root of the SD with the following contents:

[YOUR_PASS_HERE]

gpsend WM%01 gpsend PD%01%01;

Then plug the SD card back into the camera, remove the battery, put the battery back in, and turn on the camera, The camera should turn on WiFi automatically.
