Will do iOS Development for food
I can’t find job as iOS developer. Obviosly I’m the only one because whole world is looking for iOS engineers
Demand will remain high for iOS developers through 2015. As the market matures, we’re seeing two things.
- We’d hire ten quality people tomorrow if we could, if that is any indication.
bullshit
The shortage is mostly due to such a high demand. The same shortage exists for android developers as well, and both Java and objective c are old languages, so the specific language isn’t the issue.
bullshit
Github is my new Resume they said. I have github with more than 4.000 🌟 in total. I have few years of experience as iOS developer, and another few years as developer on many fields. I can adapt, and learn new things quickly. I was in middle management position - but I resigned because being programmer is what I love to do. I have some very awesome recommendation of my work on LinkedIn. I spoke on conferences and meetups about various topics - got great feedback. I write Swift from day one. I built frameworks for BLE and stull. I know that shit!
Why I’m not working with my previous employee? not my fault, and startups tend to shut down
The only thing that matters is Location. Sorry, nothing really matters besides of location. Startup need ASAP somebody, here, now, here in London. 3 months gig! You can’t? oh, sorry, we are agile, scrum, srum, top notch team working with distributed cloud solution… you have to be here.
Oh… sorry, you live in Europe? oh, let me know when you move to USA. So you don’t live in London? oh, sorry, bye. Or better, let me know when you move to San Francisco. Just rent the ridiculously priced 1 bed apartament where you can live with your kids and pay for that and school. But we need you here, not there. We are the best - and they believe in that.
This is all that matters. Location.
You think… remote work. Remote work is bullshit. Internet is fast, Slack is mega popular and yet jobs are not “remote”. Funny, how US companies think about remote - for US, remote is when you live in the same city, just don’t have to come to the office building - because startup don’t have the office at all, obviously. Or remote is - US only. Awesome opportunity.
“We hire world top developers” - let me translate: we hire developers who live here.
Speaking of Slack… yep, you know that. Slack is “…Slack to make their working lives simpler, more pleasant, and more productive” - maybe if they start using it’s own service with distributed team, they’ve could fix it a little. This is how you believe in your damn product. That how it solve any problem that wasn’t already solved.
Apple? Google? yes… they make you life mobile, you can get you phone or super thin laptop and work anywhere. But you have to come there to SF to work with us. Of course.
Startups? c’mon. This is the worst. Startup will shut down in a few months, what will you do when you relocate and you really hate the place, like crowded London or overpriced San Francisco? well… deal with it.
This is why remote work is bullshit. I’ve been there.
Ok, but.. trying to apply for the few positions that sounds reasonable. Some companies are trying at least. Jesus Christ. First… apply, with the ridiculous web forms, attach PDF CV, enter you experience in form anyway, put your address, do you need US visa? oh really? Read about all this incredibly dumbass statements why you should work here. This is top notch team, the best on the world, we hire only the best. So spent hour or more trying to write the damn cover letter. Then wait…. nobody even try to give you any feedback. Simple: “fuck off” would work. It does matter that your non-american last name sounds so weird that you’r not even considered to be a candidate.
I have few Open Source projects, free (this is important right?) and I deal with requests of course. People ask me how to do that or that because they working or something, for work! And these are really stupid questions. I read that and can’t believe - I can’t find decent job, and this idiot don’t know what he’s doing and it “top notch” team member. I just don’t get it. I can’t accept that.
All the years of experience I have, means nothing if I don’t live in SF. Why do I not move to SF you’ll ask. Affordable rentals is one of the reasons
and I need 3 bd because I have family, I have 2 kids and we don’t deserve to live in sheed, do we?
Oh… and I have wife…. this is great. Even if I get the US visa… my wife won’t. For a long time. And srsly, we have to live somehow.
Back to the “work”. I’m white, non US, non UK, non DE dude. This is the worst. Maybe if I got out of prison my chance for remote work would be higher:
srsly, dudes. Again, remote “in the city”.
So I’m white dude, no obvious minority, not even a white famale, I have no advantages. I’m just the guy who’d better work on minimum wage, because here, here we desperately looking for the best people AND WE CAN’T FIND.
This is ridiculous.
You probably noticed my non-excellent written English. “excellent written and spoken English is required” - sometimes it’s even higher than any of technical experiece requirement. I will never sound like native, EVER, so yep…. top notch team. I’m telling you, this is Americans world, and they don’t want you there.
I write this anynomously, because I hope to find some job, and hate like this is not helping. I know that. I just need to scream it out loud. I’ll better lower my expectation and secure living for the family.
I know it’s emotional but that how I feel now. I’m very emotional about my position. You ask me to be passionate about my work, and I’m damn passionate about my work, that’s why I’m so concerned.
If you read this post, and you are in the process of recruiting new staff, think again if everyting is ok. Think if you really feels OK about the apply form, requirements etc. Please think outside the box, and be honest. If you’re looking for iOS Developer in San Francisco, please don’t add information that this is the best team in the world. Be honest. Do me a favor. Probably I will find your job advertisement - this little gesture will let me not waste my time, trying to please you with another dummy cover letter.
