Focusing on the documentary Iuventa by Michele Cinque, an interdisciplinary group of researchers are working with Leeds Asylum Seekers’ Support Network (LASSN) and Hyde Park Picture House to investigate how works of art prompt us to reassess our legal and moral concepts (for example, citizenship and responsibility), and to reappraise the stories told by mainstream media.

The research team is made up of Lecturer in Italian Culture Dr Alessio Baldini, Associate Professor in Work and Employment Relations Dr Gabriella Alberti, Lecturer in International Relations Dr James Souter, Lecturer in German History Dr Stephan Petzold, and Lecturer in Political Economy of Global Development Dr Jörg Wiegratz.

The project will include a screening of Iuventa at Leeds University Union, co-hosted by Hyde Park Picture House. This will be followed by a Q&A with a representative from LASSN and with academics. A research seminar will follow the screening and address the research questions raised by the film and the debate. Finally, an interview with the film’s director will be released as a podcast.

This project is supported by Ignite funding from the Cultural Institute at the University of Leeds. We support academics to develop an effective working relationship between the University and external organisations by funding projects that will lead to engaging, relevant and impactful research with a cultural element.
