Keep Your Style Guide Simple

Nobody wants to read paragraphs of explanation

I recently looked through The UX Bookmark’s huge list of style guides. On there I noticed one problem with the majority of style guides. They’re just too darn wordy.

Nobody wants to read paragraphs upon paragraphs of text explaining why you made the design decision to make h1 text blue. (That’s why we have face-to-face interaction)

The way to best serve everyone in the team is to keep it simple:

  1. Name the element you’re styling
  2. Have a screenshot of the style
  3. State the various locations of this element
  4. Place any code necessary to create this style for easy copying and pasting

And that’s it.
