Wow!

On June 23, 2016, I was invited by Telkomsel, representing Mozilla, to speak on “Kids Go To Office” at Telkom Corporate University, Bandung. This event is quite interesting and very challenging for me because for the first time, I had to speak in front of an audience about 90 people who are the children of employees of Telkom and Telkomsel were 6–12 years old. Wow!

Before getting into core session, I asked all kids to play Spectrogram — very typical done on many Webmaker session. As usual, I as facilitator gave 3 statement. After hearing the statement, participants must choose one of three post options: Agree, Disagree or Not Sure. It was hilarious to see their behavior on determining their opinions on given statements.

Antusias anak-anak saat sesi Spectrogram // Kids are enthusiast during Spectrogram session

Menanyakan opini atas pilihan mereka di sesi Spectrogram // Asking their opinions during Spectrogram session

Then, I give them a presentation about personal privacy on the Internet, tracking and private browsing. Since the audience was too young, I had to remix the presentation material to make it suitable and easily digested by them. Although there are still many technical terms in the presentation, they seem to understand and very enthusiastic. In fact, more than 10 people asking question — ranging from the practical things to the technical problem.

Ini bukti bahwa anak-anak sekarang sudah benar-benar menjadi digital native. Tinggal orang tua yang umumnya digital immigrant dan hampir menjadi digital native harus mengendalikan anak-anaknya ketika berselancar Internet.

It shows that nowadays children are truly become digital natives.

First Time Experience Attending and Speaking at FOSSASIA 2015

On 13–15 March 2015, the biggest free/open source community event and meetup in Asia was happened in Singapore. It’s called FOSSASIA and it’s the fourth (if I’m not mistake). And it was great.

Mozilla is one of sponsors of FOSSASIA 2015 and I’m very lucky to attend as sponsored Mozilla Rep, helping the booth and also speaking about Mozilla project specifically, Webmaker.

Day-0

Because I got flight ticket departing from CGK and must have a meeting about upcoming community space in Jakarta, I must take train from Bandung to Jakarta first. After spending a night in Yofie’s apartment (thanks buddy), I went to the airport by taxi.

Once arrived, I’m checking in and dropping my baggage to Garuda Indonesia desk. Then, going through imigration using autogate-gate and meet Rara, Ira and Nhie who’re going to FOSSASIA too. They’re flying with Tiger Air. Yofie is going too by flying with AirAsia.

Arrived in Singapore and got through the immigration, I met with Rara, Ina and Nhie at Changi MRT Station. We stopped at Chinatown station and checked-in to our hotel and hostel. At night, we had a pre-event dinner near Bugis and met other Mozillians like Michael Kohler, Yogi and Sumanth.

Day-1

We were arrived at venue around 8:30 am and preparing for our booth. But since we still had nothing to put on, we couldn't open our booth yet (until somebody’s claiming our desk and using it for their booth). Inside the auditorium, we’re listening to all keynote speechs and presentations. From Mozilla, we have Gen Kanai who was presenting about Firefox OS in Asia. Also, there was Vivian Balakrishnan which is Minister for the Environment and Water Resources of Singapore speaking about smart nation initiative. One cool thing about him is he’s still doing some code.

Day-2

We went to the venue which is different than yesterday. We had our own Mozilla track on Day-2 and Day-3. Our track was on 5th floor and it made our presence was hard to discover. But thanks to Yofie, he created posters to stick on all the venue. On Day-2, I helped Raj speaking about Firefox Student Ambassador program. Also, we had our group picture with all speakers and organizers.

Day-3

It was the last day and it’s my turn to speak. It’s my first experience to speak in English in front of non-Indonesian attendees. Little bit worried at first but finally, I can do it. I was conducting a workshop about Indonesian community experience on doing Webmaker and #TeachTheWeb activities in a park without any Internet connection. We did some physical activities too like spectrogram and HTML Puzzle Box. Everything works well.

Thanks to all Mozillians who made the track even more awesome. You all rock!

Mozillians attending FOSSASIA 2015 (Photo credit: Yofie)

Mozilla@FOSSASIA2015 was originally published in Fauzan’s ReMo Reports on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

This workshop is designed for teachers-to-be who want to introduce ICT to children in a unique way. Participants learn various ways of having fun with children through “web-making” activities using Webmaker tools, acquire a wider view on ICT and create their own lesson plans as a “Class-recipe”

Stay connected with Mozilla Space, Japan

This Maker Party is an extension of the Maker Party held by Keio Media Design in collaboration with Institut Teknologi Bandung. The targets for this workshop are university students in Asia, specifically those who will be teaching children in the future teachers-to-be. The main purpose of this event is to make and share a “Class-Recipe” between participants. Class-Recipe is a type of lesson plan, which focuses on creating a wonderful ICT encounter for children through web-making activities. The various tools introduced and used in the Maker Party will help you create your own “awesome” class recipe. All workshops is organized and conducted by SOI Asia partner schools.

In this workshop, I was conducted as facilitator in University of Sriwijaya or better known as Unsri, in short. There are around 15 person who joined the workshop. Mostly are teachers, lectures and students from Faculty of Computer Science, Unsri. Together with other participants from other university via Polycom/video conference, we learn together how to #TeachTheWeb using Webmaker Tools and create cool “class-recipe” on GitHub.

Here’s some pictures taken from the events:

See you in another Inter-connected Maker Party events!

Inter-connected Maker Party — Teachers-to-be (Palembang Section) was originally published in Fauzan’s ReMo Reports on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.
