Building Castles in the Consciousness

Welcome to the eighth newsletter of The Élance!

After the turning of the new year, we’ve likely come to recognize what survival really means, not just professionally, socially, culturally, and politically, but rather mentally. And what if we shall be continually tested this year with extended periods of challenges, maybe loneliness, lay offs, and unexpected and terrifying changes or losses?

In writing, psychological relief can come from putting words to events, feelings, fears, stories, and characters, often fictional or even in the highly phantasmagoric to explain or mimick real-life ones.

While this year has only gotten started, it’s a cue also to start building something up which can be either protecting and girding something previously weakened or rather something entirely new. If last year should be any lesson, we can use it to remind us of the parts of us that we should have been stronger on; where the vulnerabilities lie in order to achieve our goals, especially creative ones.

Below I’ve written poems and micro fictions with links to their results. Please take a read and let me know your thoughts.

For New Year’s Resolution inspiration:

As One Year Rolls into the Next

“So this is a reminder that there are only about 52 weeks in a year, and we are now one week down, 51 more weeks to go. Don’t look back and keep on rolling.”

For a little sensual and relationship ponderment:

I Remember the Day When I Met You

“There is this warm and comforting satisfaction to buttery pastries, isn’t there?”

The Umami Prelude

“I can taste this metaphorically extending to stimulating sensations…”

For contemplating truths in realities and fables:

In a Sea of Faces

“Somehow helpless, each or every participant becomes compelled to rashly behave or react in a manner that only dissolves their humanity…”

If I Rise Before the Sorrow

“It’s a fairytale set in a dystopian present…”

We Gambled for Tomorrow [Micro-Fiction]

“Inspiration can come from all sorts of places. Someone close to me shared with me an amazing animation video…I had to rewind and watch bits of it again and again to digest and mull over every detail that I found deeply moving.”
