Date: August 12th, 2023
Venue: MOCA BANGKOK
Admission: Free

I finally started selecting photos that I took in Bangkok last year.

In this article, I’ll discuss some random thoughts about MOCA BANGKOK, including the museum design, lighting, and some interesting art pieces.

Coherence

MOCA BANGKOK
The museum’s spatial design is exceptional. Triangles are used in a variety of materials, sizes, and shapes to connect exterior and interior designs and achieve consistency.

There are numerous triangle windows on the walls and ceiling. When sunlight penetrates through the windows, it paints aesthetically pleasing shadows on the white walls. The design is flowing, elegant, and fresh.

Main Hall(大廳挑高的空間讓參觀者可以一進門就很放鬆)

The MOCA STORE booth design extends with geometric elements. The most distinctive part is the use of transparent glass panels for decorating the storefront, while the back wall is matte glass. The store’s combination of metal components, glass, and lighting creates a modern, stylish, and individual feeling. I particularly in love with the geometric origami-style font on the sign, adding a high-tech aesthetic.

You might note that the lighting in the gift shop is warm.

Bold wall colors

Each gallery has a different tone. What impressed me was the large portions of vibrant red and black on walls as base colors. Surprisingly, this approach complements the fantastic art collections brilliantly, highlighting their tension.

These artworks are truly unique, and upon closer inspection, you can see more details. My brother and I discussed the stories that might be behind them. It’s not an academic discussion; it’s just making up stories for fun. When we got tired, we rested on chairs. The museum is huge, with five floors, making it perfect to spend an entire day immersed in the art and casually wandering around.

The all-white display area is also stunning. Because the space is large and there are few visitors, it is easy to move around. It’s also ideal for photography enthusiasts. Visiting the place is both peaceful and enjoyable. I’d assume that the hallways here are roughly twice the size of those of the Taipei Fine Art Museum.

The highlight of 4th floor is the three gigantic contemporary paintings rendering the The Three Kingdoms (including Heaven, Middle Earth, and Hell) by three artists: Sompop Budtarad, Panya Vijinthanasarn, and Prateep Kochabua.

Bizzard Chairs Design

MOCA BANGKOK
MOCA Bangkok is particularly visitor-friendly, with individually designed chairs situated in each exhibition area. I’d never seen chairs made like these before, so I snapped a lot of extra photos of them.

Unique collection

The exhibition spaces for the mask and shadow puppet collections caught my attention immediately. The two display rooms seemed similar to permanent exhibits at the Chimei Museum.

Some interesting art pieces

Conclusion

The article developed into a lengthy piece, but there is so much to share about MOCA BANGKOK. Next time, I plan to spend the entire day there. This time, I went to Chatuchak Weekend Market in the morning and then MOCA in the afternoon, which turned out to be quite exhausting. However, I’m glad I brought my camera and thoroughly documented the visit, as that is why this article exists.

MOCA Bangkok displays Thailand’s individual perspective on modern art, demolishing my previous misconceptions about Thai art and design. It gave me more ideas of how a museum might present and design exhibitions. It also makes me think about how museums and art galleries in Taiwan should improve to become more international and locally relevant.
