看后翼棄兵學英文 (第四集)
第四章 中局
中局 Middle Game
顧名思義就是在中間的局勢，指充滿各種可能性。
我認為名稱呼應這集Beth角色受到人生挫折: 從對弈了解與大師Borgov的實力差距、養母Mrs. Wheatley的過世，因而改變了人生 (人生中局)。
1. Trip
Beth 跟上俄文課的同學說自己是美國公開賽的共同冠軍，同學說到
“Must be a trip.” (47:01)
(Netflix中譯) 肯定精彩萬分。
Trip (n) 旅行、旅程 <我想這大家都知道>、
這裡指 奇怪的，有娛樂性的，令人激動的人或經歷
(例句) My science teacher is such a trip — he says the most bizarre things.
我的科學課老師真有娛樂性，他會說一些最奇怪的事情。
Beth 又問
“Do you play?
“No, too cerebral.”
(Netflix中譯) 你會下棋嗎?
不，太傷神了。
cerebral (adj) 腦的、大腦的、理智的 (凡指會用腦的)
cerebral palsy 腦性癱瘓
(簡稱CP)
2. Famous last words.
Beth 在電話裡跟養母Mrs. Wheatley說“我不會懷孕的”。
Mrs. Wheatle回Beth 說
“Famous last words.” (40:54)
(Netflix中譯) 說得好聽。
famous last words 說的好聽 那倒不見得
(不認同對方的想法，而且覺得對方可能會為了這個想法食惡果。)
<不要死記! famous last words 逐字翻成 “有名的最後幾個字”，也就是說，說完這幾個字就掛了。>
有點像…
有些國外蠢蛋說自己不用戴口罩，因為不會傳染，結果自己死於covid.
這時候你就可以說，他說的話是 famous last words.
3. A glutton for punishment
Beth 遇到Matt與Milk 說 “我以為你們不參加錦標賽了。”
Matt回答…..
“I am. Milk’s a glutton for punishment.” (35:27)
(Netflix中譯) 我是啊，但是麥克自找苦吃。

4. Drive-in
俄羅斯小弟弟問Beth 在美國是否坐在車裡看電影，這是真的嗎?
Beth回答
”Drive-ins. You mean drive-in movies?” (22:15)
(Netflix中譯) 露天電影院。
你是指汽車電影院吧?
5. Tic-Tac-Toe
在與Borgov對弈的時候
Beth 回想起Milk說執白子有先下先贏的優勢像是井字遊戲。
“White will always win because of the first move, like tic-tac-toe.” (10:46)
(Netflix中譯) 白棋總是贏，因為白棋是先手，就像是井字遊戲一樣。
6. Throw sth/sb off
Beth 輸棋後 回到房間，Beth 對Mrs. Wheatley說到 <他不知道Mrs. Wheatley已死亡>
“It threw me off. Just like he knew it would. ”(9:41)
(Netflix中譯)沒有人這樣下棋，攻得我措手不及彷彿 他知道會這樣。
Throw sth/sb off 擺脫甩掉
“Every move he made was so obvious, so unimaginative, so bureaucratic.”(9:15)
(Netflix中譯)他的每一步棋是如此…如此明顯，如此..缺乏想像力，非常制式化。

Bureaucratic (adj) 官僚政治的、官僚主義的、繁文縟節的
(例句) I had a lot of bureaucratic hassle trying to get the information I needed.
為了得到我所需要的資料，我費盡周折應對繁文縟節。
第四集就到這裡啦! 應該說第四集開始就是Beth的超級人生轉折
