A “New York Tavern” in Barcelona
Lexington Bar is a hidden gem nestled in Eixample just a few blocks away from Rambla Catalunya. As we enter through the giant glass door on a crisp, Tuesday morning the contrast from the hustle and bustle of the street outside to the calming interior is palpable.
The dark, rich wooden panels on the wall give the bar a cozy feel, contrasting with the metallic bar stools and leading down into a narrow passage to the almost-secretive back room.
As we settle into the plush purple lounge chairs tucked in between the bar and the gigantic floor-to-ceiling windows, it feels like the perfect place to stop for a café con leche and watch the world go by.
Manager Mertixell likes to say that the bar is “tasca-neoyorkina,” like a non-existent New York Tavern. It is a tavern because you can go to Lexington to share some delicious dishes, and New York-style because of all the design features of the bar and how international both the clientele and the food is. The kitchen serves a fusion of finger foods during the day and a homemade mediterranean menu del día for lunch.
Lexington is also known for their Nachos Santa Fe, which have been delighting hungry customers for years. The nachos come with frijoles, pico de gallo, cheddar, jalapeño, tomato, and are topped off with homemade sour cream and guacamole. Yum!
The bar is lively throughout the day with different events and it seems like there is always something happening at Lexington. On Wednesdays and Fridays the far back room of the bar is taken over by freelancers who use the bar as a co-working space. On Tuesday nights they organize language exchanges and on Fridays they have live music.
Lexington also puts on the Barça matches, with a projector in both the front and back rooms of the bar. They rearrange the bar furniture to make it an even more inviting space to come watch the match and enjoy some drinks with finger food.
We definitely recommend stopping by Lexington the next time you are in Eixample. Whether it’s a morning coffee, after-work, or evening drinks with friends. The welcoming atmosphere will make you feel right at home.
