Beers, cocktails and live sport at The Black Horse
Just a little over 20 years ago, The Black Horse was still a warehouse for the Born market. Now, it’s a well-loved English pub by locals, expats and tourists alike.
The recommended drink, as to be expected when visiting an English pub, is the beer on tap. All the beers are imported, and there is a good selection of ales and lagers to choose from.
Although there’s no kitchen at the pub (due to the very thick walls, it makes it almost impossible to build one), the owners have an ingenious solution due to collaborations with other businesses in the plaza.
Their neighbor, the Caliu restaurant sells their tapas on the outside terrace of The Black Horse. In exchange, The Black Horse sells their cocktails on the terrace of the Caliu restaurant.
Customers are also welcome to bring food from neighbouring establishments into The Black Horse. For example other places in the plaza sell pizza or burgers and if it’s cold, or you don’t want to sit outside, you’re allowed to bring the food into the pub with you.
All the decoration in the pub comes originally from England. When first deciding to open the pub, the owners went to visit The Charles Wells, a pub in Bedford, England. They got to know the pub’s drinks and philosophy, and were introduced to decorators.
The owners arranged for a team in Newcastle to come to Barcelona, bringing with them everything from the chairs to the tables. The imported decor helps to bring the bar it’s character, and give it that authentic touch.
The Black Horse shows a lot of sports at the pub, and they have the ability to put up to two matches on at once. They show the Premier League and also have some loyal French and Italian customers that come to watch the Ligue 1 and Serie A matches. Other than football, they also show the Six Nations and are happy to televise other major sporting events if able to.
One of the things that differentiates the pub is the great atmosphere, because traditionally English pubs don’t always have the best reputation. A perfect example of this, was when an Argentina — England match was on.
There was a bit of friendly rivalry, as you would think, but no problems whatsoever. The Argentinians watched the match in one room, while the English gathered in the other side of the pub.
When Argentina lost the match, as they were leaving the bar the English were applauding and respectfully encouraging the fans. When the last Argentinian left The Black Horse, the English fans started to sing Don’t cry for me Argentina.
Ultimately, we really recommend checking out The Black Horse. It’s the perfect place to sit out on the terrace with a drink, head inside to watch the match, or if you’re visiting Barcelona, you might find it becomes your home base for the trip.
