There’s always something going on at The George Payne
Since opening in 2006, The George Payne on Plaça d’Urquinaona has positioned itself as Barcelona’s super bar. Somewhere in between a bar and a club, The George Payne has carved out its own niche, making it beloved both by expats and tourists passing through.
The George Payne really is an authentic Irish pub, as the brothers who founded it, Gary and George Payne were living in Dublin, running a successful bar in Ireland.
George had a home in Sitges and loved Barcelona, so had the idea to open a bar here. At first, Gary was against the idea, but George insisted. So, they ended up partnering together and purchased the space, which at the time was an old porn cinema.
Unfortunately, while they were in the process of renovating the space, George passed away and so his brother decided to name the bar after him. Henceforth the bar was named The George Payne.
The decoration of the bar is also authentic, as everything is originally from Ireland, from the bar itself, to the furniture, to the DJ pit. It’s what brings the bar its character, as the bar is really relatively new, but you won’t feel that way when you’re there. It feels like it’s been a part of the city for much longer.
Speaking of beer, it’s a great place for a quality pint. The George Payne has fresh, non-pasteurized beer brought in by truck almost every week which means the beer is much better quality. It’s not stored in kegs, the beer lives in 500 litre tanks (and they go through it fast!).
But, the recommended drink to order while you’re here is the Barcelona Blackout tray. It comes with 2 Sex on the Beach, 2 Sangria, 1 caraffe of Vodka and Red Bull, 2 shots of Jäeger, 2 shots of Tequila and 2 shots of Sambucca. All that for just 20€. You’re welcome.
Combine great drink with a great atmosphere, and you’re in for a great night out. There’s always something going on at The George Payne . Whether it’s a DJ, a beer pong tournament, a football or rugby match, or a quiz night, you can be guaranteed that whatever night of the week you visit, there’ll be something.
Ultimately, if you’re under 30 in Barcelona this is the place to be. You can go in, get a cheap drink, watch the game in ultra HD and you might even go home with a new friend. It’s a great night out.
