We’re passionate about design, but we must admit that not everything is a design challenge. Teams that ask for our help might actually have a problem related to sales. Or engineering. Or something else where our skills aren’t useful at all. In those cases, we have to fight our urge to suggest design solutions.

To a person with a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

We’ve met many engineers, marketers, designers and sales people that are too excited about the virtues of their own craft. Sometimes, you need to downplay your passion for your discipline to focus on the greater good of a project.

In our experience, the best way to develop a holistic attitude to work is to join a small, cross-competency team. In startups, and other diverse teams where everybody can be involved in decision-making, it’s easier to avoid the hammer and nail problem. It’s trickier inside corporate silos full of likeminded people.

As a consultant, it’s valuable to realise when you’re not the right person for the job. You might miss a few gigs, but you’ll gain customers’ trust over time.
