We often make videos of products that don’t exist yet. They help teams align their vision and raise funds. Digital products in these videos often look different from their final design. Just like actors and performers wear thick layers of makeup on stage, we add TV makeup to UX design so it stands out.

Here are three tricks:

1. Hide the mundane. Menus and navigation details distract viewers from what is essential. Don’t add scenes where your stars brush their teeth.

2. Say one thing at a time. Guide your audience’s attention by separating key elements from others. Slow down animations so viewers won’t miss important info.

3. Enhance visuals. Your design is only part of a larger picture, so keep your texts short and boost sizes of all elements (No need for Hollywood enhance though).

TV makeup isn’t always an extreme makeover. When done well, it reduces your product to its essentials. Keep some of that simplicity in your real products and your customers will thank you.
