San Francisco — Week 3

10 Cities in a Year

We spent most of week 3 in Seattle/Redmond/Kirkland. Yes, I know, one of the rules of the 10-cities project is to stay within the city I visit, but there is another rule that allows rules to be broken…Special thanks to Tami who hosted us in Kirkland. Our return to SF was hampered by a 4.5 hours United (the airline, not Manchester…) delay, that moved the flight from 20:47 departure to a 1:15 one…

Once back in SF, we met with Roey and his friend Amir, who did the same SF — Seattle — SF route, but driving.

Although it clearly doesn’t belong to a blog about one month in SF, I can’t resist sharing the awesome Snow Lake trail that Mai and I did just one hour drive east from Seattle. 12km round trip, 600m elevation gain, and a beautiful lake. Go do it if you are in the area.

On Sunday it was back to volunteering, this time to an adoption event of the Family Dog shelter. Tal joined. The event was next to the Andy Town Coffee Roasters Lawton branch, so that you can appeal to the audience at the long line for coffee. I was assigned to Prieta, a tiny dog female who was brought from Mexico among other dogs from Mexico that the shelter is trying to save. We didn’t get any of the dogs adopted that day, but there was a lot of interest, the dogs enjoyed the attention, and it was also good marketing for the shelter.

In the evening we were invited to Logan parent’s house in Kentville, North of SF, for dinner, and had a great time, including a delicious Indian dinner that Francesca made. For the first time in a while, we were all 5 of us in dinner together.

Wednesday was shopping day with Mai, which is really fun, as I get to be with Mai for half a day, and also have time to browse some shops myself. And I get to buy her stuff. She definitely deserves it after successfully completing the first year of Computer Science at the Ben Gurion University!

Walks this week:

Bernal Heights. We hiked thru the Bernal Heights neighborhood and park, including Holly park, following the Urban Trail book mentioned earlier (trail #38). There’s a lot of ups and downs in the trail, and the Progressive Grounds Café on Cortland street is a good place to stop for a break.

Cross-SF walk, part 2. We continued the cross-SF walk from where we left off last time at McLaren Park and walked for another 8km or so till the exit from Glen Canyon park at Portola drive. This part of the trail goes thru McLaren Park, then thru the neighborhood of Portola, over the 280 freeway in a cage-bridge to Glen Park with a stop at the Brazilian-owned Pebble’s Café for an Acai bowl. Then a nature trail in Glen Canyon Park will Portola Drive and then a 15 minutes’ walk back to the apartment.
