How to create a step-by-step guide?
Imagine guiding your users on a phone call (oh yes, disclaimer: it’s not a zoom call, and you haven’t shared any collateral with them yet). The user is trying to follow the process of using your product for the first time or understanding more about its new feature.
“User?”
“Hey,” you said
“Oh, hi,” the user replied
“Can you please guide me with How-to..” the user asked.
“Sure, login to …” you directed
…and yes click on the edit button”, you continued
“What?” the user said
“The edit button,” you repeated.
“Where,” the user asked again
“On the top right corner”, you replied
….
“I am still not able to figure out,” the user said
Uhh..
While writing step-by-step guides, walkthroughs, video scripts, and recordings, we build certain blind spots for the processes, steps, information that we either take for granted or overwhelm the user with too many steps.
It’s like sharing too much information or ending up twirling with assumptions (blind spots in the process flow) as we complete the process many times before writing how-to guides.
Ahh… I know it hurts!
I figured out this blind spot in the call itself and repeated it to identify all other assumptions in the workflow (but this time with a No code tool).
This week as a part of #10NoCodeTools with Snigdha we liked exploring scribehow.
The tool helps in automatically generating ‘How-to guides’, ‘How-to setup’ flow for products and processes. It helps understand what all steps are essential and then allows editing them to make an effective guide.
Modifying the process is easy with this tool. I was able to add quick tips and smart embed options for Hubspot, WordPress & Squarespace easily using their built-in features!
I want to explore Loom and Figma plugins that will work with the tool. A video recording of how-to instructions guides with audio editing would be beneficial in creating the knowledge base faster with more interactive content.
