Our Story of Scribe
..and the 1 year of crisis that lead up to the idea

“Yeah man, I’m just gonna park it here for about 2 years, learn as much as I can and see what happens.”
Is what Henry said to Jonathan while sitting on a bench in a park, as they both had lunch away from the company they both hated working at.
“What!? Two years? Man, I’d die if I’d stay here that long. I just left Volkswagen and this place is the same if not worse.”
Is Jonathan’s response, and then they got talking.
That was Autumn 2017, two guys, in a park, starting the conversation of starting a business together.
For the next months, they would meet for burgers on Sunday’s, walk around Berlin, and talk about ideas. They’d mess around with different ones, starting a podcast called “Punch in the Face” where they talked about random truths that they felt no one was talking about. Jonathan’s ability to talk to literally anyone on the street rubbed off on Henry, “Man, I want to try that!”, and so they just kept experimenting with ideas and life.
All the while, during this anxious phase of self-discovery, they both were journaling — but didn’t realize the other was doing the same, yet.
Henry wrote in his journal, on Sept. 1st, 2017: “I am miserable. I am miserable because I hate my job. It lacks purpose, and I think our leadership is immoral & everyone seems more interested in office politics than any mission or vision.”
Then Henry got fired from that job he hated, and Jonathan quit a month later. It was time. They were anxious, they were scared, they had no idea what was coming next, but they learned what-not-to-do at a startup with this company and they had to keep moving.
Then it happened.
“Yeah man I’ve been seeing a therapist and journaling for over 10 years, it’s changed my life. I wouldn’t be in Germany doing all of this if it wasn’t for my therapist and journaling.”
Was what Jonathan said to Henry one afternoon. “Yeah, I’ve been writing for years as well, it’s how I maintain clarity in my life.”
About a week later, on a brisk Saturday afternoon, they walked into a cafe and ordered espressos. They sat in chairs that looked like they came from their grandparent’s basement, and took out some paper. Writing on crumpled paper on their knees while they sat, the common idea came out: we need to build a company based on journaling. Something that the world has never seen before.
There are no suitable solutions out there and we need to create something that will combine the clarity and the life-changing abilities that journaling has so positively impacted the lives of both Henry and Jonathan.
Scribe has been designed with the specific idea in mind to help people better understand themselves and create a calmer mind, through writing. With its simple design and intelligence, it helps you journal in a flow like state, and is able to give you feedback on the emotions you’ve been feeling while writing. On top of that, it shows you highlights that you may consider to better understand yourself. That’s not all that is coming, as Scribe is still in a beta phase right now, but soon, it will be ready for the world.
You know that feeling of relief when you let out a big “Ahhh”, after you’ve accomplished something? or when you’re in the shower and ideas just start to flow to you? Writing with Scribe has a similar effect: it helps you realize something about yourself that you wouldn’t have known if you didn’t sit and write it out or ideas that you never knew were there. It’s bringing a connection from your subconscious mind to your conscious mind, and when that happens — In the first time writing with Scribe, these could be the effects that occur, so why not try it out?

Jonathan and Henry are focused on helping people understand themselves better, create calmer minds, and make better-educated decisions. Everything they do now, for development, is coming from the community and users that are giving them feedback.
Creating 1 million calm minds is the first goal, but the vision runs much farther than that. They’re both set on helping 76 million people have calmer minds, which is 1% of the population, through journaling. They believe talking about mental health issues and struggles in life need to become a norm in society: the stigma needs to be cleared.
To them, if you have a brain, and are an adult, then you need to start training your emotional intelligence, period. We’ve all been through things in life we don’t want to talk about: but the sooner we deal with these issues, the sooner we start to understand ourselves and start making better decisions.
Let this be an open invitation to join the tribe, they would love to have you and continue together on this journey of better understanding ourselves.
