Awareness vs. FOMO

Curiosity is one of the most important values in life. It keeps you open to new experiences, teaches you new things and at the end of the day, makes you smarter.

It’s funny how we were discouraged in school not to be too curious. Curiosity was almost the opposite to focus. But life happens anyway and the more you learn, the more you experience, the better you become.

There is at least one thing that I see as a downside of (too much) curiosity. And social media doesn’t really help. In fact, it encourages it. It’s the “fear of missing out” or FOMO. It’s when you don’t really need to get on Twitter, but you go there anyway. Cause, you know, we can. We scroll through pages and pages and suddenly it’s not about the curiosity anymore, it’s addiction. And drugs are bad, mkay ;).

So next time our curiosity leads us to engage in social media apps, let’s ask ourselves:

  • is it to find something, to learn, connect or even to get news? or
  • is it because we’re bored and we have nothing better to do?

I used to be a lot more present on Twitter and Facebook, these days I’m more aware of my need to browse through.

Awareness might just be the solution to our fear of missing out.

Don’t let your FOMO to control your life. Mkay?
