100. Why do they call it ‘horsing around’?

Being silly isn’t something that horses do.

I sometimes get on my wife’s nerves by making a fool of myself. My justification is that it makes my daughter laugh. She glares at me, jaw working as she accepts defeat. What sort of mother wouldn’t want their daughter to be happy?

‘Horsing around’ is a skill. I think everyone is born with the ability to be silly and take oneself not too seriously. Then you hit adulthood and you have responsibilities. Suddenly, horsing around is harder and harder to do. But I think it’s something you should protect.

If you’re like any focused individual who seeks to achieve great things in life, consider this: ‘horsing around’ helps you to detach from the mess of reality, the tunnel vision of that inexorably comes with the work. To be silly, to mess around, to have fun… these things blast you back up into the stratosphere, unfettered by these invisible chains, giving you the perspective to see if you’re moving in the right direction.

Simply put, ‘horsing around’ is a necessary skill to be the best person you can be.
