116. What do you do when you feel like there’s no where to go?

The obstacle is the way.

That’s the core motif of Stoicism: that the way forward is through the obstacle that’s preventing you from moving forward. Look at the picture above. What do you see? A pier that leads out into the great unknown of a lake, that’s waht I see.

A lot of people would stop and be unable to go any further. They know what’s ahead: wetness and coldness. They have a pretty good idea of what to expect based on what they can see.

But how many of us have actually jumped off the end of pier, despite our strongly held beliefs? I haven’t. You probably haven’t either. We are our own obstacle and we’ll justify to the death to uphold our beliefs.

The pier can be anything in our lives: escaping the daily grind, finding your life partner or writing a book. The wetness and coldness is four words: “I can’t do it”.

The obstacle is the way, even if there’s no obstacle in front of you. It’s usually inside you.
