20. Why I love British weddings

Over the last two years quite a few of my school friends have gotten married and I was in a fortunate enough position that I was able to fly back to the UK from Malaysia to attend some of them.

And they were great. UK weddings are so much fun because everybody is up on the dance floor having a laugh. It’s about the only time that the famed “British stiff upper lip” becomes a bit limp.

The bride and groom start of proceedings with a nice gentle slow dance and they are quickly joined by a small child who is totally going for it regardless of the beat.

Pretty soon the the dance floor is packed and it stays that way for most of the night (unless the DJ plays something truly horrendous).

You see the typical dancing dads, the kids rocking out, the friends of the bride and groom who still think they’re in their early twenties, grandparents. Everybody has a little boogie. It’s pretty much mandatory.

Of course the large amounts of alcohol help move things along and because the drinking starts quite early on (from mid-morning on some occassions), it means that by the time the meal is finished and the dance floor is cleared everybody is nicely oiled and ready to let loose.

Basically I love them because everyone just wants to get on the dance floor and have a laugh. You can dance with kids, grans, the mother of the bride, the father of the bride, anybody, and it’s all done in bloody good humour.
