Bial fumbled back in fear. His foot slipped, slithered on the edge of the platform.

He fell back, arms windmilling in space.

The librarian held onto him by his robe.

His dreadful lips parted, spread into an awful grin. Yellow teeth long and sharp.

“Who told you about that book, Bial?”

Bial was scared. Bial also did not know. Who had he heard that night, whispering?

He tried to remember, but he couldn’t. He just couldn’t.

He let out a squeak, the smallest, most terrified noise in the world.

Below, the other boys gathered, wide-eyed and curious.

“Tell me boy, or I’ll let you fall. Smash your head on that floor, you will.”

Bial’s mouth dried up like a desert. He couldn’t tell. He tried to think of names, any names.

After all, he was young. And terrified.

His pee dribbled down his leg.

The librarian cackled. He opened his clawed hand.
