It’s time I admit it. I like pop-music. There I said it… so I am sure a good number of you are asking, when and how did you get to this point?

To be clear, I don’t only like pop-music but it’s in the rotation along with rock, adult-rock, jambands, rap, r&b, classic rock,- to name a few. So how did I get here? In recent years, I have definitely gravitated towards whatever my kids want to listen to (as long as its not Kids Music or KidzBop). So listening to Hits 1 on Sirius has definitely expanded my musical palette. But, to be honest, my progression beyond Dave Matthews Band, Counting Crows, Coldplay, Pearl Jam, and rap probably started back in the Turntable.FM days.

For those of you who weren’t blessed to experience the awesomeness of Turntable.FM, it was a website that allowed individual users to choose music to play to other listeners in various virtual rooms. Listeners then would vote up or down the music choices — It was a mixture of being a DJ /picking songs on a jukebox and seeing the crowd enjoy it or not.

Back in the Turntable.FM days, there were various rooms and sometimes I’d hang out in the pop music rooms and give it a listen. For a guy who spent close to a decade away from pop, it was a bizarre, new world, but as time went on I started to like it and began listening on my own.

As a parent, I’d love to be able to find enjoyment in listening to new music for as long as I could. Is there anything better than bonding over music? I’m always trying to get my kids to listen to music I grew up on — at this point, it hasn’t progressed much further than The Beatles, but I’ll take what I could get but usually its Spyder Harrison’s Top 40 countdown.
