258. Ice cream
I’m not a huge ice cream eater. In fact, if I’m having dessert somewhere and they offer the choice of ice cream, cream or custard as an accompaniment I will always choose the custard and cream ahead of the ice cream.
Yet once in a while I will indulge in some ice cream. Although when I say “indulge” I know some of you will disagree because 9 times out of 10 I will choose vanilla ice cream. I could be at a hipster handmade ice cream place that serves all kinds of whacky flavours such as Guiness, and I’ll still choose vanilla.
Vanilla is the basic benchmark for ice cream. If a shop can’t get their vanilla ice cream right then there’s no point trying any other flavours. It’s also pretty interesting how much the quality varies between different shops and you can really taste that in the vanilla ice cream. If an ice cream parlour can differentiate it’s vanilla ice cream from other shops then you know you’re onto a winner.
Once in a while I’ll go for a toffee/caramel/coffee flavour ice cream, but I always come back to old faithful vanilla next time round.
