There will be times in life when you’ll find yourself in a tough spot. More importantly, you’ll find yourself in a place where someone you hold dear is in a tough spot.

And as tough as it is to admit, there’s nothing you can do beyond a point. It’s their battle to fight, through and through. Perhaps they even need that battle to become better; to achieve the state of Citius, Altius, Fortius.

Here’s what you can do — stand by them every step of the way. Be honest with them but don’t be an armchair critic. Whenever their shoulders droop, make it a point to seek them out and spend time with them. Give them reasons to smile and don’t mind them retreating into their shells every now and then. Give them their space and yet, don’t let that space shrink so much that it closes down on them. Don’t lost your trust in them, EVER. Let them be and tell them that who they are has worked well enough in the past. Take out your best broom and see if you can clear the cobwebs in their mind. Don’t be judgemental — there’s an entire merciless world out there for that.

Give them your warmest hugs! Hugs are therapeutic, especially the ones that come from the heart.

Be happy yourself. Happiness is a very desirable and communicable thing. Spread it to every thought in their mind if you can.

“Carry on Wayward Son” by Kansas is a beautiful song, about the highs and lows of life, about exhortion against lament, about giving yourself a rest from the madness and the chaos, about rising up and falling down with the waves and still standing tall amidst all the ruins. Give them a song like this to listen to, listen to it with them, and let them know that you’d want it to played at your memorial service.
