29) Popularity Contest
When I was going through middle school, one of the big things that the counselor made sure she talked to the students about was popularity. I never understood why at the time.
I was a fairly popular kid among a small class size. I didn’t worry whether or not people thought I was “cool”.
Now that I’m older it’s easier to see the institutionalized popularity in our culture today. Professional athletes are paid millions of dollars to dunk basketballs and hit each other on the football field.
The people that protect our country? They get a very small wage for such a sacrifice of their life for our culture — so that we can continue to enjoy this entertainment that we all pay for.
Being popular is not what we need to pursue. Having more eyes on you can create a mindset that you need to please everyone. Pretty soon you become that “two-faced” friend that everybody talks about.
Stay away from the popularity contest. Be the humble and sacrificial person that our society needs.
