I did a This, Too, Shall Pass #experiment and here’s what I figured…

Thanks tons, chuttersnap on Unsplash, for this great pic!

Last week, I did this #experiment. I wrote about the intention here. Jimmy did it with me. Thanks tons, for that. The point was to pay attention to each hour and know that it’ll pass — whether we feel good or bad about it.

So, I set up an hourly alarm, for a week. The catch, for me, was to not let it become redundant, because it would bore me out of paying attention. So, each our, I chose a random interval. Say 11.11, 12.26, 13.35, etc. Yes, it made it fun. For I did not know what to expect. :)

The #experiment got even funnier when, at first no one would ask about it. “An alarm for who-knows-what. We all set alarms.” But, after a few rings, no one withheld :).

What did I learn from my #experiment?

Bear with me here. I didn’t, yet, get the time to analyze my notes. Yes, I had notes. :) So, I’ll most probably come back with a “Later Edit”. But I can tell you how the #experiment felt. :)

  • Great conversation starter. :)
  • Awareness is subtle. There, but subtle.
  • Most of the times I liked being reminded of something. Hourly. But what struck me was that I LOVED being reminded to consider myself. To pay attention to how I felt. I mean, in the end it didn’t even matter, because it would pass anyway, but… the 10 seconds I took to write down how I felt were beautiful.
  • It was only during the pleasant times that I would’ve agreed to write the notes later. For the unpleasant ones, I couldn’t wait for the buzzer so I’d pause them. Now, this was expected, obviously. Like the goods, resent the bads. But the truly interesting thing was that when the phone rang, I knew I was to pause the feeling. And I did. Easily. If only someone or something could remind us to pause a bit…
  • I miss it. Now, when the alarm doesn’t go on anymore, I miss it. It’s tricky at work, because it might disturb the coworkers, but I am looking for some sort of an hourly reminder that… I exist ephemerally. :)

Jimmy, how was your experience, I wonder?

Thanks tons for reading this,

~ D.
