I’ve tried to self-learn to code on a few occasions. I’ve tried a couple of online tools and my favourite has been freeCodeCamp. I was able to complete the HTML and CSS fairly easily but I struggle with Javascript.

My biggest struggle though is time and commitment. Learning to code is like most things. It’s a steep learning curve and this means that it’s often easy to have your head turned by distractions.

I’m very tempted to sign-up for a 10 week web development bootcamp. It’s a full time commitment which means I won’t have time to work (earn money) or spend much time at home with the twins.

However I do think that being forced to focus for 10 weeks will provide me with a good grounding in the basics and it will make it much easier to then stick to something like FCC.

I want to learn to code for a couple of reasons:

  1. I want to be able to build things, even if they’re just basic prototypes
  2. I often work with a team of developers and it would be really useful for me to understand their world a little better, the challenges they face and just be able to speak their lingo.

I feel that if I don’t start the bootcamp in one of the next two intakes I’ll never have a better opportunity. But it will be very tough to do it with so many other things going on in my life. I guess there is never a perfect time.
