389. Function over fashion

If you were to ask me about fashion I’d tell you that I know nothing. I have very little interest in high end watches and expensive clothes. I can sometimes appreciate good style, of the very simple kind, but I couldn’t tell you what brand people are wearing or what’s in fashion today.

So when I hear people buying t-shirts for more than $50 I just don’t get it. I think the most expensive t-shirt I’ve ever bought was less than $25. In fact I tend to go for simple, clean, plain t-shirts that cost less than $5.

However drop me into an outdoor clothing shop and I’ll want to max out my credit card. There’s just something about well designed, functional gear that gets my juices going.

Recently I was in a North Face shop and it took a great deal of restraint not to walk out of there with a new bag, jacket (it really was beautiful), fleece and trousers. Fortunately I don’t have much use for a jacket and fleece in Malaysia so I couldn’t even begin to justify the purchase to myself.

It could be pretty much any outdoor brand, I’m not much of a brand snob. In fact I preferred the offerings in the North Face shop over the Patagonia shop, even though Patagonia is often seen as a more desirable brand by most.

So if I win the lottery you’re more likely to find me in the nearest outdoor shop than Gucci or Prada.
