A selection of Sigurdur Gudmundsson’s photography — source: Google Images.

I have discovered a new artist and photographer that has captured my imagination and blasted a creative hole through my brain. He is the Icelandic Sigurdur Gudmundsson.

I discovered him on the literasophy Instagram account here in combination with a beautifully apt quote:

“Artists are people driven by the tension between the desire to communicate and the desire to hide.” — D.W. Winnicott

I follow a few art and literature themed accounts on Instagram which keeps my feed filled with thought-provoking quotes and works of art. One must feed the creative beast living within.

Looking at Gudmundsson’s work without any context or background knowledge of the artist, I still find myself in awe at the sublime simplicity of his photography. I perceive poignancy and humour in every composition.

Other than the pure enjoyment of viewing his work (even if just on a small laptop screen), I have conjured an idea to use some of his work to spark written pieces of my own. How can one fail to be inspired by those glimpses into the human soul, I ask you?

‘Event’ (1975) by Sigurdur Gudmundsson.

Truly, a picture paints a million words.
