All alone in the world, in the middle of the sea. She climbs on one plank; it sinks. She’s back to floating.

Jellyfish past by. They don’t attack her, but she’s forever wary of them. They can attack her, after all. They’re just don’t.

A shark fin in a distance.

Dolphins frolic by — they give her a curious glance, poking her with their noses. She laughs. It bubbles up. Then one of them gives her a particular hard shove in her snout, and she almost loses her balance and drowns. She panics; the dolphins swim away, startled.

She’s back to gloating, all alone.

Debris pass her by.

Ships pass her by.

One of the ships throw her a lifesaver; it gets taken by another man before she can get to it.

She manages to get another one, but it’s too small. It’s not enough to carry her weight.

A small fishing boat comes through. The paddles cut through the water, and a hand reaches down to pull her up.

Unsteadily, she goes. The ship wobbles a bit, but it stays afloat. She’s on her hands and knees, in disbelief.

Are you sure this will hold me? She asks.

Do you want it to? The one on the boat asks.
