Yesterday, I was lucky enough to hear Craig Kielburger speak at a conference I attended. For those of you who haven’t heard of Craig, he co-founded the WE Movement with his brother Marc. WE is a movement that brings people together and empowers them to change the world.

If you ever get a chance to hear Craig speak, I highly recommend him. He is a dynamic speaker, easy to follow, serious but humorous and very engaging. He shared many stories, mainly about the small things we can do in our lives that can have an impact on those we meet. He talked about the power that’s created when we do things together versus do things alone.

There was one story that stuck with me after the session. Craig was part of a group who was in the process of building a school in an underdeveloped region. But, there wasn’t enough time to complete the project due to the supplies arriving too late. Craig and his group watched in amazement as the Chief yelled the word ‘minga’. Communities immediately dropped what they were doing to help build the school.

Later, they learned the meaning of minga. In Latin America a minga is a tradition of community work with the purpose of social benefit.

Imagine, with one word, communities gathering together to help the greater good. No excuses, no maybe later, no complaining. Just wholehearted community work because it’s the right thing to do.

Beautiful and amazing concept. I wonder what word we would use?
