I’ve noticed a weird trend here lately…

People highlighting their own stories. Have you noticed that too?

At first I thought it was an emphasis thing…

You know, maybe something they want to “stand out” in the story.
Guide the reader’s eye to a particular sentence or phrase.

But, coincidences are funny things…

I stumbled across a new writer in my feed — someone I’d never read before and didn’t follow. So, I went to the writer’s profile, to see what else was there.

And lo and behold, I found some stories (of course) but also noticed that the “highlighted” section was full of their own stories.

This is what mine looks like (at least today)

It has links to things I highlighted in other people’s stories.

It was kind of an aha-moment…

So, if I highlight MY stories, I won’t have links to other people’s stories on my profile. And I wondered — is that why people highlight their own stories?

I don’t know how I feel about that…

On the one hand, I can see why people might do that… so if readers come to their profile, they don’t lose visitors to other writers. But on the other hand, it doesn’t feel very community minded. After all, every writer grows because of the other people liking and sharing and commenting. You know?

Maybe there’s something I’m missing?

Have you noticed it, too? Do you do it? Any thoughts?
