Jurassic Park’s tagline that changed my life

Are you old enough to remember when Jurassic park came out in 1993? It was a huge deal. For the first time ever, our dreams became reality. Dinosaurs, the one thing every kid dreams about. They were real. Sure we had seen dinosaurs on movie screens before, but not like this. These dinosaurs, you could almost touch.

They were alive.

Spielberg had started out with early footage using a stop-motion technique. When he showed it to his kids they loved it, but Spielberg felt it wasn’t quite right. Industrial Light and Magic was experimenting with computer-generated graphics at that time. They had used this new technique for other movies like Terminator 2 and the Abyss. Spielberg decided to give it a try. The results were spectacular.

A new legendary movie was born.

While the movie itself is still an icon, there was this one convo that caught my attention. A scene between actors Richard Attenborough (John Hammond) and Jeff Goldblum (Dr. Ian Malcolm) .

The conversation went like this:

Dr. Ian Malcolm: John, the kind of control you’re attempting simply is… it’s not possible. If there is one thing the history of evolution has taught us it’s that life will not be contained. Life breaks free, it expands to new territories and crashes through barriers, painfully, maybe even dangerously, but, uh… well, there it is.

John Hammond: There it is.

Henry Wu: You’re implying that a group composed entirely of female animals will… breed?

Dr. Ian Malcolm: No. I’m, I’m simply saying that life, uh… finds a way.

There is was. That last line.

Life, uh… finds a way

This sentence is so powerful that I use it all the time. Whenever I hear worried parents talking about how the digital life consumes their children. How they will become less social. How modern society will become more evil. Whenever I hear these worried minds, I remind them of these powerful words.

Life will find a way

Social standards change all the time. It’s part of evolution. If a society thinks that a certain behavior is no longer acceptable, then that society will find a way. It will find a solution for that. It always has. It always will.
