After my riot policeman episode last week, I sat opposite an ex-riot policeman at a Christmas dinner. I told him I had never met a real policeman.

I then took great delight in regaling him with the story of his buddies outside the Benfica stadium who wouldn’t let me through their barrier to get to the metro. He laughed and asked me if I had been wearing the red coat I had on. I said yes. He pointed out that red is the colour of Benfica and on these occasions, colours are everything.
