Masks

The word persona (hence personality) is derived from the Greek word for theatrical mask.

We wear masks, that represent a polished, controlled face to the world, a persona that hides our deepest thoughts and feelings.

We interact mask-to-mask with others. The first time someone saw through the mask and glimpsed the person behind your eyes, it was both unnerving and wonderful.

There is a latent duality that lies in this. Everyone longs to be seen, to be known. But it is scary — letting your guard down and baring your soul. So, you and me, we keep on interacting through our masks, even though we want to lose them.

Letting go of the persona is freeing but fear keeps us from doing so — fear of getting hurt, being judged and being alone. A sorry state.
