Perhaps We Don’t Lose the Elasticity of Our Skin

Perhaps we don’t lose the elasticity of our skin

perhaps it just changes

comes into closer relationship to gravity

gets intimate with the pull of the earth

Perhaps this is what our skin is meant to do

to wear the colors of the sun

bend and fold to the touch of the wind

hold a pile of laughs

or a mound of tears in a wrinkle

Perhaps we don’t lose the elasticity of our desire

perhaps it just changes

comes into closer relationship to gravity

gets intimate with the pull of the earth

Perhaps this is what our desire is meant to do

to come to rest in the hand of your lover

go quiet on the front porch of disappointment

caress your merciful heartbreak

into a new dawn of longing

Perhaps I’m not losing myself to time

perhaps I’m just changing

coming into closer relationship to gravity

getting intimate with the pull of the earth

The thin membrane that holds

in from out

up from down

is becoming more vulnerably

transparent
