Priceless gifts
I once read somewhere that about giving the gift of an introduction. A little reflection on my life has yielded a number of stories but I’ll only share a few.
A couple of years ago, innocent and wide eyed but with set ideas of who I wanted to be, I asked a friend if I could join on his elective in a community hospital. He introduced me to his friend, working at the said hospital, who headed the programme. This friend became my friend and later…lets just say til death do us part and a baby.
Some time, I was frustrated with my job and desperately needed to change my environment. A friend introduced me to to someone who was hiring in my field. After an interview, I got that job and it has been one of the most meaningful jobs I ever had.
I moved to a foreign country. As anyone who has moved will tell you, this is a very lonely, difficult experience and it takes a while to settle in. A friend at work invited me to her home and her family welcomed me in and helped me settle in. This was priceless.
This Christmas season I am exploring meaningful gifts that don’t cost a thing. I’m choosing to call them priceless. Today it’s the gift of introduction.
I’m not opting out of buying presents (or maybe I am) but I’m also widening the possibilities. We’ll see how many good ones we can come up with.
