The Crash
Day 5 of racing for 15 year old Alastair held lots of promise. He was sitting fourth in the over all standings with potential for a third place race finish that day.
‘’Twas not meant to be.” Were the words his mother Jayne spoke to us when we saw her near the results van. Alastair, along with four other racers, found himself scraped and bloody on the pavement in the middle of the final lap.
One racer misjudged a turn. He hit the curb, catapulted into the air and caused the ensuing crash.
Disappointment changed to gratitude and optimism.
He was not seriously injured. Scrapes, bruises and a sprained thumb. His bike did not suffer any serious damage either. There is a tire issue. Jayne is busy in my garage working on the initial steps to fix it. She is wearing a headlamp and looks the part of bike repair professional. Pretty amazing because she is self taught.
Alastair and bike should be repaired and recovered in plenty of time to start anew at Nationals next Friday.
I am feeling a bit sad. It is their last night with us. Maybe they will come back next year. Our door will always be open to them.
