Be Honest, What Are You Afraid of?

BY NICOLE CAYER

What are you afraid of? I’m not talking about the dangerous legitimate fears like a wolf on the loose chasing you. I’m talking about those fears stopping you from achieving your goals. A fear slowing you down from taking your career to the next level. A fear hindering your personal relationships.

Fear is a crazy thing. We are not born with fear. It’s a learned behaviour. Studies have shown we learn to fear things in two ways.

1. Experiencing first hand through an event in our lives. (a person falls off a latter, now is afraid to climb a latter)

2. By observing through social interaction. (a person witnesses a friend fall off a latter, now is afraid to climb a latter)

Identify your fear and where it comes from. Once you learn the root cause you can then take the one step to overcome it. Do more of it. That’s right.

Do more of what you fear and you will not fear it anymore.

I was afraid of public speaking until I joined a Toastmasters group and forced myself to speak in front of a crowd. Now I love it!

I won’t lie to you, it’s not easy and it won’t happen overnight. But it works. Try it.

That is if you really want to overcome your fear.
