100 PM in conversation with Armen Daniyelian, Lamps Plus.

Lamps Plus is the nation’s largest lighting retailer — but they also host several online properties.

Armen Daniyelian doesn’t mind that our recording room is a little chilly —

“I’m Russian, so I’m used to it.”

Actually Armen was born in Armenia.

“I was two years old and I’d given up living in Armenia. I said, no more. Let’s move to Belarus.”

But it was the tech jobs in Silicon Valley that ultimately brought Mr. Daniyelian to Los Angeles, via the bay.

“It’s very different from any other environment. You can compare the people of Los Angeles to the people of New York. You can compare the cities. But Silicon Valley is like something set aside from the rest of the world.”-Armen Daniyelian

We sat down recently to talk about the little known digital world that drives the nation’s largest lighting retailer, Lamps Plus.

But that’s not all.

In this third episode we got down to the root of what makes running startups so exhilarating, why product managers are just like CEOs (but without the power) and why “just doing it” is sometimes the best tech education you can give yourself.

Tune in for all this plus the scoop on:

  • Why the best PM jobs aren’t usually listed under “Product Manager”
  • What the biggest challenge to managing offshore dev teams really is (hint: it’s not language or time zone)
  • The danger of idealizing Steve Jobs
