Day 3: Taking a Knife to It

In yesterday’s post I spoke about Geco Hub‘s fins, what they’re for, what they’re made of, and what they have in common with toothpaste…

Today I’ve been modifying a 3D printed model of Geco Hub’s backboard to help make these fins fit.

My tool of choice? My trusty Leatherman Skeletool. Pretty low tech but it got the job done!

It’s Easier To Remove Than Add

If you’re ever unsure about the correct dimensions to use for parts of your design when prototyping, good practice is to aim to have to remove material to get the fit right, rather than add. This is because in most circumstances it’s easier to remove material (by cutting, filing, scraping etc.) than it is to add material back on.

For example, if you have a pin on one component that needs to fit into a hole in another component, aim to make the hole slightly smaller. This way, if the parts don’t fit, you can gradually file material away from inside the hole until they fit perfectly, rather than starting with a loose fit and trying to add more material on later.

Guest Blogging

In other news I’ve been working on a few blog posts for Medium, have submitted one to a publication for consideration, and have reached out to an interior design website about the possibility of writing a guest post for them.

“What’s the deal with all this writing?” You ask.

The idea is that these articles will reach new audiences — people outside my circle — and offer something of value (be it information, insight or entertainment) and hopefully draw people’s attention to what I’m working on at the same time… i.e. the 100 To Launch challenge and the Geco Hub Kickstarter!

Simple, right?

I didn’t invent this strategy, it’s a tried and tested technique that works, it just requires work.

Plus if it works it’s essentially free publicity, the only caveat being it takes up quite a bit of your own time (due to the aformentioned “work”). Here’s a great article on the subject.

I’ll let you know how this guest posting stuff plays out. Fingers crossed! 🤞
