Adventures in Quiet Places

This idea came from looking at the world map and noticing the Kuril Islands.

I wondered: “has anyone done any cool adventures exploring all of these islands?”

It’s obvious to me that people have sailed all of these islands, and that natives have likely rowed all of these islands and so on and so forth, but has anyone swam them? Has anyone done a kayak-camping excursion? What are the adventures that people have done in this area?

The Kuril Islands—a disputed territory—stretch up from Hokkaido, Japan.

I’m not sure what adventures are being done on the Kuril Islands. And I’m not sure what adventures are being done on other remote locations that feel quiet or hidden to my Western Gaze. I’m reminded of the many lists and book about forgotten, hidden, lost, secret, and unknown places in the world. There seem to be a lot. And while I seriously doubt the people of the Kuril Islands forget about themselves, I can’t help but think that the epic adventures that take place in this locations don’t get quite the publicity of those in a certain part of Nepal.

The Idea:

I think it’d be fun to have a newsletter that specifically focused on adventures in places like the Kuril Islands. Still focused on the adventures and physical challenge, but adding the mystery of their location to the story.

As mentioned above, I think it’s incredibly important to recognize that the local populations are, in some cases, not participating in these adventures we fetishize, and may even be exploited by the tourism in their country. It would be the challenge of the writer to make sure to focus on stories that honor and build up the local cultures and people.

But I wonder: does anyone read newsletters anymore? 🤔
