101. The Electric Prunes — I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night) (1967)

- So, just a few things have happened since I last posted. My wife and I bought a house. We adopted a puppy. There was this minor election that took place. Needless to say, I have a lot of excuses here for having fallen off the map.
- But no! No excuses! I’m not letting The Electric Prunes get off that easily. Because in truth, they’re the biggest reason I stopped posting. This album fits neatly into the lower-middle end of the 1001 — it’s a solid, but unremarkable album, reminiscent of some other bands like the 13th Floor Elevators, with a handful of truly excellent tracks (such as the title track). But ultimately, it ends up sounding…kind of like what you’d expect from the history of the Prunes. I can see why this album sold well, why some felt they had a chance to lead the west coast Psych movement, and also why they never really took off in that manner.
- So here we are: life has settled down enough for me to return to the list, and I’m powering through the Prunes to get moving again. Thanks for your patience!
