1001 Modern Nights — Submissions Open!
A primer on what we’re looking for, how formatting works, and how to submit your piece
Thanks for taking an interest in writing for 1001 Modern Nights.
We’re on a constant hunt for compelling narratives and tales pertaining to the Middle East. Amidst its riches, one can find an endless jar of stories that possess the ability to cross into the present, touching lives just as they did in their prime. Bringing them to the limelight will help fight stereotypes that detract from the Middle East’s bountiful heritage.
Before submitting a piece, run through these guidelines so that we can publish your work as soon as possible.
It consists of the topics we intend to cover, things to keep in mind with respect to submissions, and how to submit an article. While we welcome writers of all kinds, take a look at FreeCodeCamp’s excellent Medium handbook for pointers that may surprise even veteran writers of the platform.
What We’re Looking For
- Tales unearthed from the Middle East. While stories that don’t stray too far from the original are accepted, we’d prefer if you make the piece your own with some form of analysis or contemplation.
- Creative interpretations of existing works are welcome as long as they do not belittle or demean the work of any creator.
- Journeys into the rick folklore and mythology of Middle Eastern culture are encouraged.
- Verses of poetry that unfurl like a Persian carpet to its audience and depict the Middle East’s boundless heritage will certainly find fans at 1001 Modern Nights. Don’t limit yourself by the type of content that you intend to write.
- As long as your piece connects to Middle Eastern culture in some way, it will most certainly find a home at 1001 Modern Nights, provided it doesn’t propagate a negative sentiment of any sort.
Submission guidelines
- While unpublished drafts are preferred, we are open to publishing self-published pieces as long as they meet our requirements and if they haven’t been published elsewhere in the past.
- Splitting paragraphs with subheadings helps in making your article more readable. As for images, they must be free from copyright and must be relevant to the context within your work. Image captions must contain the source of the image. Unsplash and Pexels are good places to hunt for free stock photos.
- Before you send in your piece, do a quick search to see if someone has already written about the topic you intend to cover. If you’ve covered the same topic from a different perspective, feel free to send it over.
- While we do understand that we all make mistakes, proofread your work before you send it in. Tools like Grammarly and the Hemingway Editor cut down on errors, reducing the amount of time it takes for an article to be published.
- Plagiarism is something that will not be tolerated at any cost. We trust our writers to be aware of the repercussions.
- Ensure that titles are in the “Title Format” while subtitles and subheadings are in the “Sentence Format” without trailing punctuation. The title and subtitle on this article is a good example.
- If your article contains terms or acronyms that may be unfamiliar to your audience, explain what the term means when you mention it for the first time. Not everyone knows who an emir is (a Muslim commander/ruler or a prince).
- Your submission must comply with Medium’s Rules and Ad-Free Policy.
- All submissions must be in English. While specific parts can be referred to in different languages, they must be explained or translated in the piece itself.
- Your submission must adhere to the Middle Eastern theme.
