The cd command has a wonderful helper for the last visited directory. Type cd — to jump back to the last directory you were in.

This also works with git branches — git checkout — returns to the last branch you opened.

Finally, when editing files with vi to jump to the last buffer you had open in command mode type CTRL+^.
