This is a story told to me by my friend S Gaw.

“Brian Kernighan was on my dissertation committee at Princeton. I was volunteering for a summer camp at the university to help prepare students from underrepresented groups. One of the courses was a C programming course. Dr. Kernighan asked me how it was going, and I told him that I didn’t remember C very well.

“So I asked him, in earnest, ‘Can you recommend a good C book?’

“He turned around, opened up his cabinet which contained stacks and stacks of the K&R book and said to me, ‘What language would you like it in?’

“He was not amused.”
