Hi I’m Amy 👋 , I think I’m like a lot of millennials; curious, ambitious but a little bit lost! I applied for the Catalyst programme in the hope that it will open my eyes to a whole new industry and help me figure out the next steps in my career. We’re only 4 days in, and it’s definitely achieving this and some! I think the bit I hadn’t expected was how connected, motivated and inspired I would feel meeting the other people on the course. And our #100DaysOfHustle project is just one consequence of this!

A bit about you?
In my previous life, I worked for a large automotive group as a Product Development Engineer, I had a fun couple of years there but in the end, I decided it wasn’t the career for me. I’ve always been drawn to technology and often day-dream about how the world might look in the future — that’s when I realised how cool it would be to actually be a part of designing that future!

Whilst studying Mechanical Engineering at University, I learnt how to code in Java, C++ and MATLAB but never really got to do any projects building websites or apps. For my #100DaysOfHustle challenge, I have pledged to spend atleast an hour a day learning how to be a web developer.

What’s the future looking like for you?
Since starting the challenge, I actually applied and then got accepted on a coding bootcamp which will start in November. The course will teach me everything I need to know to do both front-end and back-end web development — there’s no escape now! But it’s only because of my new friends on the Catalyst course that nudged me to be brave and apply, that I’m actually taking these first steps towards my new career — so thank you guys!

Catalyst on Day 4 with our wonderful panel — I’m on the far right!

What will you be doing during #100DaysOfHustle?
I’ll be receiving pre-course materials pretty soon so that will dictate what I’ll be doing for the next 4 weeks at least, but so far I’ve spent a bit of time learning the basics of HTML, CSS and JavaScript. So far so good, I think coding is like riding a bike, the basics come back to you after a bit of practice.

I did start freeCodeCamp’s Front End Development Certificate but for me it rushed through the first few sections too quickly.

For JavaScript I really enjoyed codecademy’s Introduction to JavaScript — their pace worked for me.

To go back and relearn the HTML and CSS stuff I’m going to look at Colt Steele’s Udemy course — I’ve heard great things about this one and he promises dogs in it so it’s a no brainer.

I think with choosing an online course, it just comes down to personal preferences, especially with learning styles but also with how much you already know. Best thing to do, is just try a few and see which ones you enjoy most, at the end of the day, it should be fun!

What have you done today?
Today I’ve gone right back to basics on the Udemy course — it’s funny how no matter how many times you relearn something, there’s always something new that you didn’t pick up last time. The output from today… a tribute page to my favourite puppy!
