The Landscape

Perpetual contracts have come a long way since their introduction to crypto in 2016, passing through multiple iterations. From centralized orderbooks to virtual AMMs, and from centralized liquidity to pools of LPs becoming the counterparty to traders and sharing rewards. These were important improvements, but as user participation increased and more advanced traders joined the space, better execution was needed. Latency and costs needed lowering, and experience, improving.

As long as orders are filled at a fair price, the underlying mechanism is not as important as what the protocol offers. Users are often herded through the same dull corridors of established pairs, earning only when trading, and only if their profits aren’t eaten by funding rates. If they want new tokens, they can’t get them in a perp protocol. Exposure to the market is limited, and it comes at a price. But it doesn’t have to.
