Daily Scrum as early in the morning as possible
This post is part of 101 ideas for agile teams.
Context
Your team holds the Daily Scrum meeting late in the morning or right before or after lunch.
As a consequence, there is little coordination of the work done in the morning. Or there are additional conversations in the morning to get work started.
Team members arriving early in the morning do not know what happend late yesterday. And sometimes they do work that was already done. However, this is only discovered after several hours of work in the “late” Daily Scrum.
Action
Hold the Daily Scrum at a time, when normally every team member has arrived at the office. Let’s say 10 minutes after the typical arrival of the last team member (give him some time to get a coffee ;-).
Focus the Daily Scrum on planning how the team works together in the next 24 hours.
What you gain
The team will have a better understanding of the ongoing work and therefore, will collaborate better.
There is less risk of work done twice — or less time to do work twice.
How to strengthen
It is important that all team members feel comfortable with the time of the Daily Scrum. Therefore, pick a reasonable time.
After you have tried the new time for several days, ask in a retrospective what has changed for the team by holding the Daily Scrum earlier.
Risks
If the time is set too early, team members will come late and/or be grumpy.
