“Mum, you’ve given me everything I need”

Gilmore Girls is coming back on Friday…. And we can’t wait to have our two favourite small town Connecticut gals in our lives again! Loreli and Rory brought their fast-paced banter, life lessons and (intense) love for coffee to the small screen for years… and we can’t wait to have them back in our lives again! To fuel our excitement, we asked seven women from around the world to share their own unique mother-daughter stories with us. Read on below to hear a few fun facts about each pair, including the things their most grateful for, lessons they’ve learned… and, if not coffee, what they could spend hours chatting over (warning, tea features heavily with this group!)
We’d love to hear your story too! Follow us on 10x Women and leave your comments after the article.

Ruthie and Jane — USA
Beverage of choice for a chat: Tea with homemade honey (yes… she harvests her own!)
What are you most grateful to your mother for? Her unconditional love, silliness and support
What have you learned from her that you’d never admit to? More often than not, you should bring a jacket or sweater
If you have a daughter (now or in future) what is the one thing you’d like to pass on to her that you got from your mother? The courage to understand, embrace and celebrate your true self

Aditi and Vrunda — India
Beverage of choice for a chat: Chai! (the real Indian version with lots of spices!)
What are you most grateful to your mother for? Her strength and unselfish giving
What have you learned from her that you’d never admit to? She always used to tell me I should be less aggressive; and she’s right… but would never admit that to her!
If you have a daughter (now or in future) what is the one thing you’d like to pass on to her that you got from your mother? A great capacity for emotional learning and growth… and some family recipes

Alexa and Florence — Uganda
Beverage of choice for a chat: Chai! (the East African version!)
What are you most grateful to your mother for? Her “energizer bunny” strength and brilliance that uniquely comes with a massive amount of compassion and humility. It’s taught me me that “soft and strong” is a fantastic combination
What have you learned from her that you’d never admit to? Don’t be afraid to haggle and question what’s offered to you. Sometimes you really are being ripped off, and it doesn’t just mean mean you’re being cheap. When in doubt it is important to know what you’re paying for!! (full flashback to forced market days when I was young)
If you have a daughter (now or in future) what is the one thing you’d like to pass on to her that you got from your mother? Patience. It is in the season of waiting that the greatest learning of self happens. I don’t ever want to miss her moments of zen.

Carolyn and Suzanne — Canada
Beverage of choice for a chat: Ovaltine (usually in the middle of the night)
What are you most grateful to your mother for? Her unwavering support — she makes me a lot braver than I’d be on my own!
What have you learned from her that you’d never admit to? That breakfast really is the most important meal of the day.
If you have a daughter (now or in future) what is the one thing you’d like to pass on to her that you got from your mother? Resilience. And dancing in the living room…. And her sewing skills (yes, she made those costumes!)

Malina and Delia — Romania
Beverage of choice for a chat: Fruit tea
What you are most grateful to your mother for? Her genuine sense of truly enjoying the smallest things in life
What have you learned from her that you’d never admit to? Collecting cute things (including animals)… it’s a legacy destined to continue!
If you have a daughter (now or in future) what is the one thing you’d like to pass on to her that you got from your mother? Always be happy and kind because then life will also be kind with you.

Maria and Elena — Russia
Beverage of choice for a chat: Tea, tea and more tea
What you are most grateful to your mother for? The empowerment and confidence she gave me. She believed I can do anything I wanted to. I always felt I am worthy thanks to my family. I have never ever been discouraged from anything
What have you learned from her that you’d never admit to? Soup is good for me!
If you have a daughter (now or in future) what is the one thing you’d like to pass on to her that you got from your mother? I would like to pass on the inner strength I have gained from my mom. You can cope with any situation keeping the “joi-de-vivre” when you simply refuse to self-pity. Thanks Mom!

Emily and Francoise — Canada
Beverage of choice for a chat: Tea before bed
What you are most grateful to your mother for? I’m grateful that she encouraged in my sister and I a spirit of curiosity and adventure that’s led us to so many incredible places and experiences. I’m also grateful for what she represented through her words and actions — she was the best example of generosity, tolerance, humility, hard work and tenacity I could ever hope for
What have you learned from her that you’d never admit to? I think I’ve got a bit of her strong-will… or stubbornness, depending on who you ask ;)
If you have a daughter (now or in future) what is the one thing you’d like to pass on to her that you got from your mother? A love of reading… and my curly hair!
*p.s. Yes, we fully realise that Rory would have said “Mom, you’ve given me everything I need”… one of our editors just happens to be pretty set in her ways!
